Many objects around us contain integrated circuits and are controlled by software: coffee makers, washing machines, drones, smartwatches, vacuum cleaners, thermostats, medical devices, and more.

The Internet of Things (IoT) promises that more and more objects will be interconnected and smarter.

These objects are autonomous, specialized, and combine electronic components (hardware) and software components (firmware). They are complex mechatronic systems that require multi-disciplinary engineering: mechanical, electronic, and software. Such objects are referred to as embedded systems.
